U.S. Congressman, Indiana Governor. Educated at the Illinois Normal School, he moved to Indiana, in 1879, taught in the public schools, (1881-89), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1889 and practice law in Williamsport, Indiana. He was member of the Indiana State Senate, (1890-91) and elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving (1895-97). In 1904, he was elected as a Republican, the 26th Governor of Indiana, serving until 1909. As Governor, the coliseum was built on the state fairgrounds, a tuberculosis hospital was constructed and the Industrial School for Girls was established. After leaving office, he was editor of the Enquirer Publishing Company, organized the Flying Squadron of America and a prohibition lecturer throughout the United States, (1910-20). While on a lecture trip, he was killed in an automobile- train accident at age 57.
