Russell Norman McCoy Jr., 81, of Santee, husband of Bobbie Collins Gerber McCoy, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at Santee Presbyterian Church, 206 Bradford Road, Santee, with the Rev. John C. Doubles officiating.

Born March 18, 1923, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late Russell N. McCoy Sr. and the late Helen Margaret Bankel McCoy. He grew up in Pittsburgh and attended the University of Pittsburgh prior to WW II. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. He was transferred to Buffalo, N.Y., where he was active in the Masons, Consistory and Shrine. In Buffalo, he belonged to the Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary where he taught "Aids to Navigation" and participated in search and rescue operations. He was a member of Rotary, the Buffalo Executive Club and was on the board of the Adequate Wiring Bureau of Western New York. Mr. McCoy was active in charity and civic organizations, serving on the budget committees of several United Fund organizations. In 1970, he was transferred back to Pittsburgh. He was a member of Highland Country Club and president of the Electric League of Western Pennsylvania. In 1974, he was transferred to San Francisco and in 1978, was transferred to Phoenix, Ariz. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Electric League of Arizona. Mr. McCoy and the late Catherine Seigal McCoy retired from Phoenix and moved to Santee in 1989. Catherine McCoy died in 1993. In 1995, he married Bobbie Collins Gerber in Santee Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder.

Survivors include his wife of Santee; two daughters, E. Jean McCreary of Gulf Port, Fla. and Phyllis Helen Barnes of Treasure Island, Fla.; a brother, Clifford McCoy of Oakdale, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Renee G. Spencer of Summerville and Rhonda G. Hanes of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a stepson, Thomas A. Gerber of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson, Joseph Sousa; and seven stepgrandchildren.
