Winona May Rouze, 96, a longtime resident of Holyoke, was born Nov. 28, 1913 to Frank William Koberstein and Clara Elenor Foy Koberstein near Hastings, Neb. She died May 9, 2010 at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke.
In 1919, Winona moved with her parents to Holyoke. She attended Silverbeam #16 Country School through the first eight grades and graduated from Phillips County High School in 1931. The following 18 months she worked at Lorena Olmstead Maternity Home in Holyoke, knowing she always wanted to become a nurse. During that time, 75 babies were born there.
The next six years she worked at Mt. Airy Sanitarium in the domestic department and took classes at Denver University. In 1937 she entered St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1940 with a Registered Nurse degree.
On Nov. 10, 1942 she married Glenn Rouze. They moved into a newly built, two-room home in 1943 at the J.S. Rouze Ranch. Winona enjoyed helping with the registered Hereford cattle and putting up alfalfa from one of the early irrigation wells in the county. Due to Glenn's failing health Winona and Glenn later moved to Holyoke, where they lived for several years before Glenn died in October of 1978.
Nurses were in short supply at the Holyoke hospital and Winona worked as needed, and also did private duty work in Sterling, Haxtun and Julesburg. Because of a shortage of teachers during World War II she obtained her emergency teaching certificate and taught at Pleasant Valley #5 School from 1947-1949.
Winona was confirmed March 28, 1929 at Grace English Lutheran Church. She was also a longtime member of United Methodist Church of Holyoke. Winona was a member of Eastern Star and taught the BONA (Bunch of Nurses Aides) program for prospective nurses for many years.
She was always a kind and loving caregiver and touched many lives in the Holyoke community. She was awarded the Holyoke Outstanding Citizen of the Year award and in 1987, she received the distinguished Nightingale Award for excellence in human caring.
Winona was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; parents; brothers, Floyd and wife Mary, Lee Frank Koberstein and Ray "Swede" Koberstein; and sister, Faye and husband Art Dulgar and their son Jim.
She is survived by her brother, Roy "Bud" Koberstein and wife Pauline of Holyoke; sister, Emily Haynes and husband Delbert of Holyoke; sisters-in-law, Berdine Koberstein of Holyoke and Vernelle Koberstein of Pullman, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held May 15 at United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Blake and Pastor Paul Sung officiating. Interment was at Holyoke Cemetery. The service was directed by Baucke Funeral Home of Holyoke.
