John Wesley Robertson was born August 6, 1929 in Wayne County, North Carolina. Approximately 1850, John migrated to Tennessee along with his father, John Henry Robertson where they resided at Dyer and Lauderdale County.

John married, about 1851 in Tennessee, Rebecca E. Unknown. Two children were born to this union: William Henry and Martha Ann Elizabeth Robertson. It is believed that this Rebecca died in childbirth because not long after, in 1855, John Wesley Robertson married Celia E. Unknown. Three children were born to this union: Mary Jane, Celia Emeyline, and John J. Robertson. About a year after the birth of their third child, Celia died on March 4, 1861. John Wesley Robertson took as a third wife, Phoebe Peterson, on August 27, 1861. Two more children came from this union: James A. and an Infant who died when he was born. Phoebe died the day after her small infant on July 9, 1983. John Wesley married last, Harriett Stella Peterson. This wife was strong enough to bear him eight children before she died in 1879.

John Wesley Robertson served in the War Between the States in the 47th Tennessee Confederate Infantry. He enlisted on December 8, 1861.
