TATE, Hugh C. Sr., 57, of 38 Shotwell Drive, New Cumberland, WV, passed away on Sunday, the fifth day of February 2012, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born March 30, 1954 at Weirton General Hospital, the son of the late George A. and Kathleen C. (Doak) Tate.

He was a Methodist.

Hugh was an Eagle Scout and the father of an Eagle Scout. For three summers during high school, he was a staff member at the Fort Steuben Scout Reservation.

He was a 1976 graduate of West Liberty State College with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in journalism. While at West Liberty, he was elected Vice President and then President of Student Government. Also at college, he was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity where he served as vice-president and pledge trainer.

He joined the Hancock Courier Printing Co. in July, 1976 where he began selling ads and printing jobs. In 1978, he also went to work at Weirton Steel where he became a journeyman machinist. In 1982, Hugh became co-owner of the printing company and co-publisher and co-editor of the Hancock County Courier. In 2010, he and his wife Tina bought the company and he became the sole editor and publisher of the paper.

For six years (1981-1987) he served as Municipal Court Judge for the City of New Cumberland. He was a member of New Cumberland Lodge# 22 A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite of Wheeling, Osiris Shriners of Wheeling, and the Northern Panhandle Shrine Club.

He was a member of the New Cumberland Lions Club and a former member of the New Cumberland Fire Department where he served as secretary. Hugh was also a member of the board of directors of the New Cumberland Cemetery where he had been secretary/treasurer since 1999.

He is survived by his loving wife, Tina M. (Chambers) Tate at home; a daughter Amanda M. (Tate) McKinney, her husband, Steven, and future Granddaughter, of Weirton; a son, Hugh C. Tate, Jr. of Chester; and daughter, Jennifer S. (Tate) Cunningham and her husband, Brian of Chester.

Hugh is also survived by his two sisters; Judy Virden and her husband, Bernie of New Cumberland and Jane Tate of Pittsburgh.

Services will be held at the Turley Funeral Home, in New Cumberland, WV on Monday February 6, from 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, February 7, from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 8, at 11 a.m. at the Turley Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Staub and Pastor Charles Thomas officiating.

Interment will follow at the New Cumberland Cemetery.
