A native of Moore County, was the son of John David Bates and Mary Jane "Mollie" Doster.

Survived by his wife, Mrs. Eva Lue Callahan Bates. 4 children; Mary Ruth, Anita, J.C. and Wayne Bates. 2 daughters and a son by a former marriage, Mrs. Elsie Brandon of Moore County, Mrs. Luvine Baker of Virginia and Ewin Bates of Tullahoma. Mother; Mrs. Mollie Doster Bates of Huntsville Ala. 3 sisters; Mrs. Sarah Hart and Mrs. Lizzie Stone of Bridgeport, Ala and Mrs. Florence Thompson of Huntsville. 3 brothers; Marion Bates of Shelbyville and Jasper and Robert Bates of Huntsville.
Buried in the Hurricane Cemetery on April 13, 1944.

Spouse #1, married Kate M. Osborne, 8 Oct 1909 in Moore County, Tennessee.
