John, a native of British Ireland, was killed by an embankment cave in. As a result of his death, his family was left destitute, and the community was encouraged to assist the family.

John was a successful miner, but somehow the money was spent.

The loss of their father was the first of a long chain of tragedies suffered by the family.

In 1870, James and Julia Conlin lived in Columbia where James was a miner. They were both from Ireland, and they came to California and had a large family. In 1870, their household was as follows:

Andrew Conlin, age 7

Sometime between 1876 and 1880, James and Julia Conlin passed away. The eleven brothers and sisters of their Irish born parents were living in Columbia in 1880, trying to make it on their own without their parents or other family members.
