Alberta Larson
1926 - May 29, 2013

Alberta Larson, age 87, of Canadensis, passed away at her home Wednesday evening, May 29, 2013.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa to Susan Ambler Hopkinson Haag and Albert Hopkinson in 1926, she was a child of the depression and part of the 'Greatest Generation.' She dropped out of high school in the early years of World War II and began what would be a long career in the aviation business. Bert began driving a fuel truck at a small airfield in Philadelphia where she had no problem climbing on the wing of various sized aircraft, dragging the long, heavy fuel hose behind her!

Bert married William Doak Larson and lived in the Stroudsburg area for several years, returning to the Philadelphia area in the early 1950's and to her aviation roots in a clerical capacity. Bert earned her GED later in life, as a single mother and fulltime employee. She respected the many benefits of an education. She retired in 1989 and moved to her home in Canadensis to be closer to family. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Gravel, and son-in-law Roeb Gravel, Bethany, PA, grandsons Peter Swendsen, Oberlin, OH and Matthew Gravel, Arlington, VA, sister Edith Coulter, Stroudsburg, PA, niece, Bertie Coulter and life partner, Tom Geise, Danville, PA, nephew David Coulter and wife Michelle, Henryville, PA and their children, Harry and Aubrey.

Bert was an accomplished pianist and wonderful cook. Holiday dinners won't be the same without her gravy and stuffing! To say she was an avid gardener would be an understatement. Her flower beds were her sanctuary. The wren, cardinal and hummingbirds will miss her generosity and love. Above all, her family will miss her independent spirit and great pride and total devotion to each of them. There couldn't have been a more devoted fan of the many activities of both of her grandsons. Her pride in them was immeasurable.

A celebration of her remarkable life will be held later in the summer for her family and many friends. Contributions in her memory may be made to Barrett Township Historical Society, P.O. Box 358, Mountainhome, PA 18342 or Concerned Citizens of Barrett Township, P.O. 523, Mountainhome, PA 18342.

Arrangements were made with the help of the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360 www.wmhclarkfuneralhome.com.
