The son of Christian & Ann (Heiney) Wissler, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Manor Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted November 3, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 8 as a private with Co. E, 178th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). During change of guard at Fort McGruder near Williamsburg, Virginia, on May 14, 1863, he was accidentally shot in the left hand and hospitalized, suffering the loss of three fingers. He honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1863.

He married Mary Ann Rhoades and fathered Christian R. (11/11/64), Jacob R. (11/11/67), Augustus R. (10/10/69), Margaret Ann (b. 08/24/73), and John R. (b. 01/31/77). Cause of death was consumption. The widowed Mary married John H. Keller in 1883 and re-widowed ten years later when he was killed at the state lunatic asylum. She then married George Luther.
