Dies Suddenly
Plant Superintendent
Succumbs at 63
John B. Sterling, sr., 63, died
this morning at 11 o'clock at his
home. 703 N. George St., following
an illness of only a few hours.
He was born in Mannsville, May
28, 1882, a son of the late James
G. and Ella McGuire Sterling. He
was educated in Oneida Valley
schools, and came to Rome at the
age of 19 to enter the employ of
the Rome Manufacturing Company
where he has been employed
for the past 45 years, and where
for the past 10 years, he has been
night superintendent.
On Sept. 7,1911. he married the
former Minnie R. Williams of
Rome. The ceremony was performed
by the late Rev. Philip H.
Cole, D. D.
Mr. Sterling attended the First
Baptist Church. He was an outof-
doors enthusiast, spending a
great deal of his leisure time hunting
and fishing.
He was a candidate for the next
initation class, BPOElks, Rome
Lodge, 96.
Surviving in addition to his wife
are one son, John B. Sterling jr.,
Westernville; one daughter Mrs.
Ralph V. Goddard sr., Rome; one
brother. Henry J. Sterling, Canastota;
seven sisters, Mrs. Myrtle
Seaman, Mrs. Nina Bowman, Mrs.
Marian Deane. Mrs. Stillman Tuttle,
all of Canastota; Mrs. Huntley
Reed, Sherrill; Mrs. Carl Mayer,
Durhamville, and Mrs. Elsie Jen
Kotteck, Bell Rose Manor, L. I.,
two grandchildren. Ralph V.
Goddard, jr., and Vicki Sterling
Goddard, both of Rome, and several
nieces and nephews.
