He was born July 1, 1928, in Washington County, Virginia, a son of the late Lewis Childers and Stella Gobble Childers. He lived his entire life in Washington County. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Raytheon after 30 years of service and had attended Greendale Chapel.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Childers and one sister, Irene Dixon.
Survivors include his son, David Childers of Abingdon, Virginia; three sisters-in-law, Rose Leedy and Trula Fields, both of Abingdon, Virginia, and Tina Baumgardner and husband Ben of Lebanon, Virginia; two nephews, Chris Leedy and David Leedy, both of Abingdon, Virginia; and several other nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Elmer Childers will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Friday, April 30, 2010, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family would like to extend special thanks to those who sent cards, brought food, or extended kindness in any way.
