Son of Eleazar and Charity (Williams) Dexter.
According to Lucius Paige's History of Hardwick, Massachusetts, Joseph suffered a serious accident in early life while blasting rocks. He lost an arm and sight of both eyes. He became a successful showman, which "secured a comfortable maintenance for his family." He resided on the Petersham road at the place marked "D. Dexter" on the Ruggles Map.
