September 19, 1923 - June 2, 2013 Genaro "Cesar" Ramirez, 89, passed on June 2 in Corona, California surrounded by his loved ones. Cesar was born on September 19, 1923, to Prudencio Juan-Pablo Ramirez and Carlina Gonzalez in Surgidero de Batabano, Habana Province, Cuba. He was raised in San Antonio de Las Vegas with his 7 siblings until he began working as a manual laborer in his early teens. A man of the strongest work ethic, he continued working for 60 years. In the early 1950's he immigrated to New York City where he worked as a handyman, eventually obtaining a certificate in refrigeration mechanics. In Brooklyn, he met the love of his life, Anna Berroa, whom he married in 1960. Cesar returned to Cuba several years later with his wife and two very small children to visit his ailing father. Not by choice, that visit became an almost four year stay. Undeterred, he and the family were able to return to New York then resettle in Los Angeles County. He worked at American Airlines and American Can Co. until securing a position at Pennzoil in Vernon where he worked for 20 years, obtaining his plumber's license. Cesar and Anna lived in Huntington Park for over 30 years where they raised their three children. He was a talented harmonica player and poet, loved ranching, and was always the life of a party. He worked around the clock to provide all of his children opportunities in higher education. He is survived by his loving wife Anna, his son John of Corona, daughter Marissa Gonzalez of Wildomar, and son Genaro of San Diego, along with their spouses, Jane, William and Bertha. He is also survived by his brother Pablito and sister Ofelia of Havana, and his grandchildren Juan-Pablo, Dawn, Carlina, Tiffany, Genaro III and Andres. Viewing will be on Wednesday June 5, 7 - 9 p.m., and funeral mass Thursday June 6, 10:30 a.m., both at the San Gabriel Mission. Burial will follow mass at Rose Hills Cemetery.
