Evalyn M. DeGraw, 98 of Midland, died Sunday, June 2, 2013 at her home. She was born May 12, 1915 in Arcadia, WI, daughter of the late Herman and Martha Sophie (Berg) Rusch.

Evalyn was confirmed and raised in a Wisconsin Synod church. During World War II, while living in Milwaukee, she attended an LCA church and worked making parachutes. After the war, the union, the International Ladies Garment Workers, offered her a business agents position. After turning down the offer several times, she finally accepted the job. Shortly after she was transferred to Ishpeming in the UP, working at the old Gossard plant. Evalyn then transferred to the Detroit office, representing Lower Michigan.

When she moved to Jackson, Evalyn and her first husband, Wilbur Bollinger (deceased), were active in Immanuel LCA church and its efforts to build a new church building. She served as the fund raising secretary and was active in the women's group where she was involved in the unit and district chapters. In 1967, she married Henry DeGraw and moved to Sanford. Henry worked in the oilfields as a driller and supervisor. Together they started Midway Construction and Excavating Company and ran it for many years.

Evalyn also worked at Dow Chemical Company as an executive secretary until her retirement in 1982. In their retirement years, they both enjoyed traveling across country visiting family and friends along the way.

Although Evalyn did not have children of her own, she was a second mother to Henry's four children: Cheryl (Mike) Lane of Charleston, SC; Sue (Tom) McMurray of Beaufort, SC; Randy (Maree) DeGraw of Maleny, Austrialia and Rusty DeGraw of Lake City. Fifteen grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren, and one great,great-grandson. She is also survived by her sister Lois Ann Kaiser of Arcadia, Wisconsin.

Evalyn enjoyed her family and friends and treated her friends as her family. While in Midland, Evalyn was very active in her church, St. Timothy Lutheran. Where she had been a founding member of and continually stayed active in. Loved by many, including her four cats, she was also an active member of the ‘Camping Gang'. In addition to her parents, and her first husband, she was preceded in death by her second husband Henry DeGraw on March 1, 2004 and a brother Orville Rauch.

Memorial services for Evalyn will take place 11 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2013 from the St. Timothy Lutheran Church. Pastor Elizabeth Retz will officiate with inurnment to follow in Midland City Cemetery.

Evalyn's family will receive friends at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street on Thursday afternoon from 4-8 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the St. Timothy Lutheran Church.
