Topeka State Journal Wednesday 8 March, 1972, pg. 19:

HAYS - Michael Hammerschmidt, 21, Hays, was pronounced dead after he fell from a scaffold at a construction site here Tuesday morning.
Mr. Hammeschmidt was employed by Pierce-Schippers Construction Co. He was regarded as an outstanding baseball player and had played both American Legion and semi-professional baseball. He was graduated in 1968 from St. Joseph's Military Academy at Hays and held the rank of cadet captain.
His wife, Jolene, and four-month-old son, Shawn, survive at home.
Other survivors include his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Adolph Hammerschmidt, Hays; a brother, Stephen Hammerschmidt, Hays; 3 sisters, Rebecca, Lisa, and Tammy Hammerschmidt, all of Hays; and grandparents, Mrs. Matilda Hammerschmidt, Hays, and Mr. & Mrs. Celestine Karlin, Severin in Ellis Co.
Services will be Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at Hays with burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Brock's North hill Funeral Home at Hays is in charge of arrangements.
