During the Civil War, George served as a Private in Company I, 7th Vermont Volunteer Infantry from January 1861 to February 1864 (1890 Census of Union Veterans)

George married Armena Walker about 1867. In September, 1909, this advertisement appeared in sesveral papers: :" NOTICE-- Any person who can give information concerning the whereabouts or death of Armena Walker, who married George Strong, a veteran of the Civil War, sometime prior to 1864, will confer a favor by informing J. A. Walker, Pension Attorney, Cavendish."

About 1870, George moved to the area then known as Factoryville, in Chester, Vermont.
