Her family located in Southeast Portland, where they were members of St. Phillip Neri Parish for many years. Mary attended St. Mary's Academy graduating in 1958. After her high school graduation, Mary followed a call to religious life, joining the Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, at Marylhusrt.

Mary was in private practice for several years, also working for a time at the University of Portland. Following her retirement in 2005, Mary continued to serve her family, friends and religious community as a caregiver until the time of her own illness.

In 2010, Mary celebrated her Jubilee Year, honoring 50 years as a member of her religious community. That year, four other Holy Names sisters celebrated their jubilee with her.
