Colben/Kolbein was a farmer and the captain of the fishing ship Lydiano. He married Helga Larsdatter July 6, 1863 in Baken, Rogaland County, Norway. He and Helga and their 2 children emigrated in 1866 with his uncle Anders Anderson Askland. They left Haugesund, Rogaland County, Norway on May 3, boarded the sailing ship Hercules at Stavenger, Norway bound for Grosse Isles, Quebec, Canada. They arrived at Grosse Isles June 7, 1866, traveled to Detroit, and finally to LaSalle County, Illinois. Helga died August 11, 1866 in Leland, Illinois, five days after their baby girl Lisa Elida died.

Colben married Bertha/Britta Christine Christiansdatter in 1867 in Leland, Illinois. In 1869 they moved to the Sheldahl/Slater Norwegian settlement area, Story County with Bertha and two children, and purchased 80 acres of land. At the age of 38 Colben became a US citizen on September 23, 1872.

Colben died at the home of his daughter Malinde Severtson.
