Nancy H. Manson, 87, died Thursday, December 27, 2007, at the Westminster Canterbury, Charlottesville, from complications following pneumonia.

She was born October 13, 1920, in Evanston, Illinois, but moved to Jacksonville, Florida at the age of two where she lived until her marriage.

She was the daughter of the late Peggy and Fred Hughes of Jacksonville, Florida; and the sister of Margaret Lee Kiely (Woodside, California), Emily Taber (Glen St. Mary, Florida) and Mary J. Harper (Tallahassee, Florida).

After attending Mary Baldwin College, she married Peter C. Manson in January, 1941, moving with him that year to Hawaii where Peter had been assigned by the United States Army.

Her first son was born five days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She had four sons altogether, Hunter Manson, Pete Manson Jr., Fred Manson and Bo Manson.

She was preceded in death by two of her sons, Pete and Fred.

Her husband Peter remained in the Army after the war, which included a tour in Japan where Nancy taught in a Japanese high school and worked for the Tuttle Publishing Company. In 1958-1959, while living in Charlottesville, Nancy and a group of other mothers organized and operated a temporary high school as a substitute for Lane High School, which had been closed as part of the massive resistance policies of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Later she began a weekly radio program for children on WCHV known as the Story Time Hour, which used classical music backgrounds for her readings to children and she also taught Kindergarten for several years at the St. Annes Bellfield School.

In addition to her three sisters, she is survived by her husband of 66 years, Peter Manson; a brother-inlaw, Hugh Manson; as well as her two sons, Hunter Manson and Bo Manson and their wives Ingrid and Julie; along with two daughters-inlaw, Vally and Lauren; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 30, 2007, in the St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ivy, Virginia, with the Reverend Miller Hunter officiating. Interment will follow in the churchyard.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131.
