Phyllis Joan Lute of Michigan City died peacefully on Sunday evening, June 2, at her home where she lived her entire adult life. Her daughter Rebecca was at her mother's bedside for the last hours of her life, along with family friends and care providers. Phyllis's husband of 63 years, John Edward Lute, died at home in October 2011. Phyllis was a stay-at-home mom, devoted to her five children. She doted on her six grandchildren. Phyllis was born January 30, 1926, to Edward and Lola Cross Gloye, of Waterford. Her father delivered milk and managed the stable at the Sanitary Dairy owned by Edward's brothers, Al and Max Gloye. She attended Waterford Community School, and later was an active member of the school reunion committee. The Gloye family attended First Christian Church. Phyllis had three sisters: Bernice, Aimee Jean and Prudy. She is survived by Prudy who lives in Colorado Springs with her husband Paul and their family. Phyllis graduated from Elston High School in 1945. She was introduced to John Lute by his cousin, Lucille Bull, by way of letters as he served overseas in the U.S. Army in the Pacific theater in World War II. During the war Phyllis joined her classmates collecting scrap for recycling. She worked as a waitress at Ritter's restaurant and in the office of the South Shore Railroad. After John returned from the war and took a job as an electrician, he and Phyllis married on August 7, 1948 at First Christian Church. They moved into a new home that John and his father, Frank, built next door to their family home on a farm south of town. Phyllis became a member for more than 50 years of the Coolspring Project Club, a women's civic group affiliated with the LaPorte County extension office. As her children became involved in the 4-H Club, Phyllis began more than 25 years of service as a 4-H leader. As the family belonged to the First United Methodist Church, Phyllis became active in the Women's Circle. Phyllis Lute is survived by four children: Beth and her husband Jack Lyness in Newark, California; Douglas and his wife Jane in Arlington, Virginia; Rebecca at home; and Patricia and her husband Charles Smith in Washington, D.C. Her son, John, passed away in May 2000. Her six grandchildren are Sara and Max Lyness in Newark, California; Kate Lyness in Venice, California; Amy Kyleen Lute in Amman, Jordan; Adellyn Polomski in New York City; and Kamryn Holl Lute in Arlington, Virginia. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday June 06, 2013 with Reverend Dr. Gwendolyn Roberts of First United Methodist Church officiating, at Geisen-Carlisle Funeral & Cremation Services, located at 613 Washington St. Michigan City, IN 46360. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday June 5, 2013 at the Funeral home. Private burial will be at the family plot at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the 4-H Booster and Alumni Association. To view guestbook or leave condolences, visit www.Carlislefh.com.
