Nellie Estelle Barrow died Sunday January 11, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born April 13, 1919, in Petersburg, VA, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Nellie Robertson. Nell had been a resident of Abingdon, VA since 1958.
She was a 1948 graduate of St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond, VA. She was an active member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Potts Martin Sunday School Class, and the Response Circle. Nell was a member of the Random Arts Club, Book Lovers Club, Johnston Memorial Auxiliary, Appalachian Trail Club and served as a volunteer for Friends of the Barter Theatre. Nell was a past volunteer of the Virginia Highlands Festival and served as both a Brownie and a Girl Scout Leader.
In addition to her parents, Nellie is preceded in death by sister, Sue Robertson; brother, Roy Robertson; brother-in-law, William Barrow; and 4 sisters-in-law, Ellen Barrow, Ruth Robertson, Kaye Robertson, and June Robertson.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Guy Joseph Barrow, M.D.: 1 daughter, Susan Barrow Humphreys, M.D. and husband Rick; 2 sons, John Daniel Barrow III and wife Nancy Heriot, and Guy Joseph Barrow, Jr. and wife Dianne;; grandchildren, Caroline Heriot, Brannon and Anna Epling, Jeremy Humphreys and wife Julie, Todd Humphreys, Meghan, Joseph, Hannah, and John Daniel Barrow IV; 3 brothers Rev. Richard Robertson, Ben Robertson and wife Libby, and Gene Robertson; a brother-in-law, John Daniel Barrow, Jr.; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews. Nell is also survived by special friends, Nancylee Bailey, Lois Humphreys, Betty Patterson, Margaret Peters, and others too numerous to mention.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday January 14, 2004, in the Abingdon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Rowland and the Rev. Betty C. Reiff officiating. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be Jim Bowden, M.D., Mickey Bradley, Max Brown, D.D.S., Brannon Epling, Jeremy Humphreys, Todd Humphreys, Fred Parker, and Mack Patterson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tom Bailey, David Brillhart, M.D., Randy Cole, M.D., French Moore III, D.D.S., Doug Patterson, and members of the Potts Martin Sunday School Class.
