Gerald was the son of Alvie Smith and Mary Burton. He married Rose Smith.

Oct 5, 1984 - Humboldt County Independent - Gerald Marvin Smith, 58, Humboldt, died Monday, Sept. 30, at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Richard Kretzschmar officiating. Special music was provided by Mrs. Don Nelson, soloist, and John Petersen, organist. Honorary casket bearers were Leslie McPherson, Tom Crahan, Elmer Zinnel, Howard Lockwood, Denton Myers and Paul Clay. Casket bearers were Ronald Smith, Douglas Prior, Marvin Smith, Patrick Besaw, Shannon Smith and Terry Hansen. Mrs. Don Stamper and Mrs. Howard Lockwood were in charge of the arrangement of flowers. Kenneth Smith and Kenneth Larson were ushers. Military rites were conducted by the Adams American Legion Post No. 119 of Humboldt-Dakota City. Interment was in Union Cemetery at Livermore. The Lindhart Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gerald Marvin Smith, the son of Alvie and Mary L. Burton Smith, was born July 2, 1926, at Mackey. He was educated at Livermore and then served in the United States Army in the South Pacific during World War II.

He returned to Livermore and was united in marriage to Rose Smith Oct. 17, 1948. They made their home at Livermore until moving to Humboldt in 1952. He was employed in grain elevators at Livermore, Hardy and Humboldt for many years and had been employed by the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital for the last 14 years.

Survivors include his wife Rose; sons, Ronald of Fountain, Colo., and Marvin (Mel) of Humboldt; daughters, Mrs. Douglas (Brenda) Prior of Dakota City, Mrs. Patrick (Cindy) Besaw of Humboldt and Miss Shawn Smith at home; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Curtis of Boone and Maurice of Minneapolis, Minn.; and his sister, Mrs. Emmett (Evelyn) Knight of Story City.

Mr. Smith was a member of the United Methodist Church of Humboldt, the Lions club, V.F.W., and the American Legion where he had served as commander.
