NORRIDGEWOCK - Virginia R. Ferris, 91, has gone to fly with the angels. She passed away peacefully after a brief illness on May 29, 2013, with her loved ones by her side. She was born in Skowhegan on Oct. 3, 1921, the daughter of Joseph and Rose (Vincent) Roderick.

Virginia graduated from Skowhegan Area High School -- Bloomfield Academy with the class of 1938. After graduation, Virginia worked with her brothers in the family machine shop making parts for the Navy during the war effort. Virginia later moved to Bangor and resided at the YWCA.

While living in Bangor, she studied music and the violin at the Northern Conservatory of Music under the direction of M. Stanley Cayting. Upon moving back to the Skowhegan area, Virginia met and married Michael Ferris.

They were married on April 5, 1947, spending 55 years together. Virginia and Michael eventually settled in Norridgewock after living in Connecticut for a brief period. Together they raised five children, but were parents to many others along the way.

Virginia was an artist, as well as an accomplished violinist. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Art for two consecutive years. She was also a member of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and Colby Symphony Orchestra, as well as a member of the orchestra at the University of Maine at Farmington for many years, of which she was very proud.

Virginia became a jack of all trades throughout her life, serving as the house carpenter putting up and mending fences, a farmer, a nurse and vet, as well as an artist, musician, chief cook and bottle washer. It wasn't uncommon for some of us to sneak over to get a taste of her grape leaf rolls, dynamites, or grape jelly, for which she was well-known. Lovingly known as "Nana," she touched all those who met her, always imparting upon them her pearls of wisdom and anecdotes about life. She truly cherished her family and friends, always trying to help all those who crossed her path.

She is predeceased by her husband, Michael Ferris; son Robert M. Ferris; brother Edgar Roderick; brother Paul Roderick; former sister-in-law Arlene Roderick; and sister-in-law and best friend Eloise Roderick.

She is survived by her four children, Martha and Gordon Robbins, of Norridgewock, Joel R. Ferris, of Kennebunkport, Becky Eldridge, of Norridgewock, and her husband, Terry Eldridge, of Rumford; granddaughter Julie A. Smith and husband, Robert, of Cornville; two grandchildren, Lila Eldridge, of Cornville, and Zoe Frolich-Ferris, of Kennebunkport; five great-grandchildren, Emily Barney, of Farmington, Hillary Barney, of Skowhegan, Andrew, Liam and Olivia Smith, all of Cornville; and two great-great-grandchildren, Hannah Thompson, of Canaan, and Autumn Lessard, of Skowhegan; nieces and nephews Lynne and Richard Roderick, of Madison, Jimmy and Susan Roderick, of Norridgewock, and Paul Roderick Jr.
A graveside service will take place at St. Sebastian Cemetery in Madison. (Morning Sentinel 6/5/2013)
