Arthur married Julia E. Patterson (1847 IN-1936) on 25 Jan 1875 in Marshall Co., Indiana. (From: The Weekly Republican, Plymouth, IN – Thu 28 Jan 1875 pg. 5) “Married. THOMSON. PATTERSON. –At St. Thomas Church, in Plymouth, Monday, January 25th, at 9 A.M., by the Rt. Rev. J.C. Talbot, Bishop of Indiana, Mr. Arthur L. Thomson and Miss Julia E. Patterson—of this city. This event is no doubt the beginning of happiness. Mr. Thomson, not being content with the possession (in prospect) of the people’s treasure, has considerately taken to himself a far great treasure of a personal nature. The entire community is a unit in wishing them that joy and peace which ever attends those who are truly married. (Thanks for the remembrance.)” (From: The Weekly Republican, Plymouth, IN – Thu 28 Jan 1875 pg. 4) “—‘The compliments of Mr. Mrs. A. L. Thomson,’ inscribed upon a neat little package of wedding cake, was deposited in the REPUBLICAN office, on Monday, Jan. 25th, from which we inferred that our worthy Marshall County Treasurer elect, Mr. Arthur L. Thomson, and Miss Julia Patterson, were married on that day.”

Arthur and Julia would have five children together-Ronald (1876-1953), Anna Ruth (1878-1957), Gertrude Orinda (1880-1970), Agnes Margaret (1883-1967) and Arthur William (1889-1976)). I found the family on the 1880 Census living in Plymouth, Marshall Co. where Arthur was earning a living as a lumber dealer. Besides their three eldest children-Ronald (4), Ruth (2) and the-yet-unnamed Gertrude (2 mos.), the family employed two servants-22-year-old Jane Sidell and 33-year-old Amos Hibbs.

The couple wecomed Agnes to the family in 1883, and Arthur in 1889.

Arthur died in 1891 at age 61, leaving behind a widow and five children. I found them on the 1900 Census, living at 154 Walnut St. in Plymouth. Fifty-three-year-old Julia (incorrectly transcribed as "John"), was a landlady. All five children were still living at home. Ronald (24) (enumerated as "Roland") was a news reporter, Ruth A. (22) had become a school teacher, Gertrude (20) was working as a clerk in a store, and Agnes, aged 16, and William, aged 11, were at school. The family also had a servant to help out--18-year-old Irma Hutch.
