KINGSPORT - Haskel M. Shanks, 79, died Wednesday.

His family stated, " God called and Haskel answered."

He was a son of the late John Ober and Bertha Crabtree Shanks of the Milburnton community in Greene County.

Mr. Shanks attended Chuckey High School, now Chuckey-Doak High School, in Greene County.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Shanks retired from Quebecor Book Manufacturing Company in 1993.

"He was a Christian, publicly accepting Christ as his Savior during his teen years.

"Haskel was a member of a United Brethren church for several years. After moving to Kingsport, was a member of a Southern Baptist church for the rest of his life," his family noted.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Mauveline Shanks Simpson; and three brothers: Leonard Keith Shanks, Oran Ralph Shanks, and John Thurman Shanks.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mount Carmel.

A celebration service will be held at 4 o'clock at the church. Dr. Randall Pressnell and the Rev. T. Richard Harris will officiate.

Entombment will follow in Oak Hill Mausoleum in Kingsport.
