Junius Vaughn was born on April 3, 1931, in Sumter, to the late Henry and Carrie Gayle Vaughn. He departed this life on June 2, 2013, at the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

Junius, known to family and friends as "Snook" or "Uncle Snook," received his early education in the public schools of Sumter County, where he graduated from high school. He then entered the military.

After completing his tours of duty in the U.S. armed forces, he was honorably discharged and returned to Sumter, where he attended Morris College and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1958. Junius taught in the public school system of Clarendon County for several years, until he decided to relocate to Bayonne, N.J., where he worked at Fairmount Chemical Co., Newark, until his retirement.

At an early age, Junius joined St. Luke AME Church, where he served faithfully until he moved to Bayonne. While residing in Bayonne, he became a member of Wallace Temple AME Zion Church. He was active in civic organizations and was a life member of VFW POST 7470, Bayonne, and Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Junius was married to the late Gloria Jean Scott Vaughn and they were blessed with three wonderful children, two of whom preceded him in death, Samuel Glen Vaughn and Barbara Jean Vaughn.

He leaves to love and cherish his precious memory: a son, Matthew (Clarice) Vaughn; two grandchildren, Jennifer Belle and Jonathan Belle; four great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Jolissa, Zaire and Za'niya Belle; a loving, devoted and dedicated friend turned caregiver, Mattie White; a brother, Richard Vaughn of Jersey City, N.J.; two sisters-in-law, Flossie B. Vaughn and Geneva M. Vaughn; a devoted niece, Earnestine Primus; and a host of other dedicated nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
