James Joseph Bonin, a resident of Abingdon and formerly of Farmington Hills, Michigan passed away on Friday, September 11th at the age of 84.
He was born in Iron Mountain, Michigan on May 1, 1925, the fifth son of the late Henry Bonen and Rose Duhaime. He enlisted in the US Merchant Marine in 1942 and served throughout World War II. In 1947 he went to work for the Pere Marquette Railroad as a deck hand. Ten years later he entered engine service as a fireman with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, he later was promoted to engineer, and retired from the CSX Corporation after thirty eight years of service. He was a long time active member of Southfield United Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. He attended Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in recent years.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Betty Lucille Bonin, and four brothers: Emery Bonen, Victor Bonen, Joseph Bonin and Benedict Bonin.
Survivors include one son, Robert Bonin and his wife Mindy of Abingdon and one grandson Ashby Bonin; three brothers, Roy Bonen (his wife Jeanne), Gerard Bonen and Frances Bonen; sister-in-law, Dorothy Bonen; numerous nieces and nephews; special lifelong friends, Dr. and Mrs. Richard Schiff and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Conner.
Funeral Services for James J. Bonin will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church with Minister Tom Crise and the Rev. Beth Yarborough officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.
