Helene, 87, passed away at 3:20 a.m., at her home.

She was born in Mariupol, the daughter of Nestor and Efrosinia
(Kartasch) Nikolaenko. She married Joseph Merle Carter, who survives in Waynesfield.

Also surviving are three sons: Mike (Lois), Reynoldsburg, and Andy and Brian (Louise), both Waynesfield; six daughters: Larissa (Mike) Osbun, Huntsville, Loretta (Bill) Diehl, San Diego, CA, Lana Hall, Waynesfield, Tamara Belisle, Lima, Linda (Karl) Wolf, Wapakoneta, and Laura (Steve) Shepherd, Gahanna; a sister, Valia, Ukraine; a special cousin, Lena (Wally) Wowk, Strondville; and twenty-three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Deceased are a brother, Gregory; two sisters: an infant and Larissa; and in-laws, Everett and Hattie Carter.

She "baby sat" for many children in the Waynesfield area. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother. During WWII, at the age of 16 she was taken by the Nazi's from her family in the Ukraine to Wiesbaden Germany, where she was forced to work for the Germans. After the US troops liberated Germany, she stayed and worked for the Americans. In May 1950, she was sponsored by General A. Wood Rigsby to come to the USA. She first met her husband in 1946 in Wiesbaden, as he was in the military. After he returned home from fighting in Korea, on September 23, 1951 they married in Omaha, NE and would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary this year.

Funeral services will be at Armentrout Funeral Home, Waynesfield, with Rev. Don Smith officiating.
