Ransom Peake Ferguson was born about 1795 in South Carolina. He was the second of eight children of Daniel Montgomery Ferguson and Esther Owen Peake. His siblings were: Mary Ann "Polly," James, Turner Peake, Charlotte, Eugenia Peake, Atlanta Marie, and Austin Peake Ferguson, all born in South Carolina.

The family left South Carolina about 1808 and traveled by wagon to Louisiana. They settled in Bayou Chicot in St. Landry Parish (now Evangeline). Ransom grew up on the family plantation, learning the skills which would serve him well as an adult.

Ransom farmed on his plantation and also owned a general store and operated a grist mill and cotton gin.
On 8 January 1923, he married Sarah Emily Montgomery. They became the parents of five children:
Calvin Witherspoon, Warren Montgomery, Melissa Adella, Clinton Heath, and Ransom Montgomery Ferguson.

Ransom was widowed on 28 March 1846 when his wife Sarah died.

On 11 February 1850, Ransom married Charlotte Insall, daughter of Thomas Holifield Insall and Mary Wholeship Insall. Ransom and Charlotte had four children: Katherine Mary, Henry Thornton, Eugenia P., and Esther A. Ferguson.

Ransom Peake Ferguson died in May 1860 in Bayou Chicot, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana at the age of 65.

He is buried on his plantation or in the Ferguson Cemetery, grave now unmarked.
