David Kerley, one of Rockford's early settlers, who returned to this city eight years ago after many years spent in the west, passed away Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home of his half-sister, Mrs. C.S. Wilson, 1360 Third avenue, after an illness dating back to last September.

Mr. Kerley was born in Crockerton, England, in 1832, and came to Rockford when eight years of age. After living here for ten or twelve years, Mr. Kerley went west, living for several years in California, and later settling in Montana, where for the past thirty years he has maintained a stock ranch. Mr. Kerley had the distinction of being the first carrier of the United States mail to the first miners in Montana.

Surviving Mr. Kerley, who was never married, are three half-sisters, Mrs. C.S. Wilson, with whom he lived, Mrs. A.M. Wilson, of Beloit, and Mrs. J. R. Blake, Wood River, Neb., and two half brothers, Wm. Cutler, and James H. Cutler, both of Beloit.

Funeral services will be held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. Mr. Evans of the Episcopal church of Beloit officiating, and burial will be in Cedar Bluff cemetery.
