He was an eminent practicing physician for 53 years. He first commenced as a nurse of the sick during the prevalence of a fearful epidemic that prevailed extensively in 1816, called the "cold plague." Dr. Braley set-up his practice in the Eastern part of town. He came to practice as a physician, in which he continued until his death when being on his way to visit a patient, a breaking of his carriage caused him to fall, resulting in instant death. He had practiced the healing art about fifty-six years.
He was a strong Abolishionist, and a staunch advocate of the Temperence cause, making one of the first Temperence speeches in the Mass Legislature, where he served as a Representative for two years. He was Selectman for 14 years, and was widely known for his benevolences, and many good qualities. He was one of the founders of the Mason's Corner Church in 1831 and for a number of years was clerk of the church. Dr. Braley held many town offices and was twice a state representative. He was twice elected as a member of the General Court.
