Mr. Coots was a Confederate veteran who married and started a family in the Panhandle of Texas. He was a member of co. K Mccords Frontier Reg. TX Cav. C.S.A. He spent the war as a frontier guard against Indian and Bandit attack. The 1880 census shows Mr. and Mrs. (Mary) Coots and 3 Children in residence in Gray Co., Texas. He as a cattle driver. This was the time when cattle were driven from this part of Texas to markets in Pueblo and Denver CO. A stopping off place was north of Raton Pass in the area of Walsenburg CO.
This is where Mr. and Mrs. Coots and 8 other family members repose. Mr. Coots is marked by two stones (the original and a newer bronze marker that cites his Civil War service) Someone must of cared to do this. Other headstones in the Coot's plot are showing the effects of time and neglect. I would like to put this family in a book. If anyone has information on the Coots family, co. K McCords Frontier Reg.,Gray co. TX, Goodnight-Loving trail, pre or post coal Walsenburg, Leah Sarah (Davis) Coots, or the Collins family in Walsenburg or areas near-by, please contact me at e-mail @ [email protected]. Thank You
