SPRINGFIELD - Forrest V. Butterfield, 95, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at the Springfield Hospital in Springfield.

He was born Jan. 13, 1918, in Rockingham, the son of Edmund B. and Vivian (Burke) Butterfield.

He attended schools in Springfield and graduated from Springfield High School, class of 1936. He later graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, class of 1942.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

On Aug. 29, 1942, he married Marilla M. Kittredge in Brownsville. She predeceased him on Aug. 6, 2006.

He was employed as a mechanical engineer at Jones & Lamson Machine Tool Co., and Bryant Grinder Co. in Springfield. He was later employed as a sales engineer with the Fellows Gear Shaper Co., from 1951 until his retirement in 1980.

He lived in Springfield for over 80 years.

He was a Star Scout, the third highest award earned in scouting. He was an active member of the St. John's Lodge #41 F.&A.M. and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was involved with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, assistant superintendent of the Sunday school, and also served as usher and deacon.

He enjoyed woodcraft, golfing, skiing and bowling.

Survivors include a son, William F. Butterfield, of Ellicott City, Md.; a daughter, Judy A. Donaldson, of Elverson, Pa.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Bodine.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. The Rev. Gerry Piper, pastor of the United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield.

Friends may call Tuesday, June 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lodge #41 F.&A.M., 71 Main St., Springfield, VT 05156; the United Methodist Church, 10 Valley St., Springfield, VT 05156; the Meals on Wheels Program, 139 Main St., Springfield, VT 05156; or to the charity of one's choice .

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
