A Civil War pensioner, the son of William and Margaret "Peggy" (HENSLEY) GILES, Calvin Giles/Jiles had served with Co F, 43d TN Infantry, CSA, fighting at Perryville, KY; Bull Gap, TN; Marion, VA; and Vicksburg, MS (where he was paroled from the field). Following the war, in Morganton, Burke Co, NC, he married a Civil War widow, Dica Ann "Dicy" (SMITH) ENGLAND (1833-1895), who had given birth to eight daughters during her marriage to Jacob ENGLAND (1825-1853). About 1866, Calvin. Dicy, and her girls returned to Calvin's home, Roane Co, TN, by wagon. They were tenant farmers and generally be found in records somewhere within the area where Roane, Rhea, Meigs, McMinn, Monroe, and Loudon Counties all bunch up near one another. Calvin outlived Dicy by over 30 years and is buried near Nannie, the daughter he lived with for all those years after his wife's death. Dicy - also in this database - is buried in the New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery, Loudon Co, TN, closer to the home she shared with Calvin near Paint Rock in Roane County.
