Ruth Jolowicz, former executive of Walter J. Johnson, Inc./Academic Press and one of Manhattan's oldest residents, died June 12, 2005 at the age of 98 at her home near Gramercy Park. Academic Press, now a division of Harcourt Brace, is one of the largest commercial publishers in the United States for scientific information, and is known throughout the international scientific community. Academic Press was originally founded in Europe in 1906 by the publishing family of her late husband, Paul Jolowicz, antiquariat for Academic Press. She was born Ruth von Eltzsch to parents Martha and Fritz Eltzsch of Liepzig, Germany.

Academic Press, or Akademische Verlagsgesellschaft, began in Prussia and after WWI the family was forced by a new Poland to move to Germany where it resumed operations and quickly became one of the leading science publishers of Germany. The Nazi's took over the concern in 1938 prompting a move to America. The new Academic Press grew steadily in New York under the management of Walter J. Johnson and Kurt Jacoby, founders of the American branch and descendants of the same Jolowicz publishing family. Ruth Jolowicz was a department head and retired in 1971.

The Jolowicz family lived in Yorkville on Manhattan's Upper East Side where they were very active in the German-American community during the heyday of "Kleindeutschland", or "Little Germany"; a bygone era when German breweries, stores, restaurants and families filled its borders and German was its common tongue.

She is survived by her daughter, laureat German-American Historian Kathryn A. Jolowicz, and a cousin by affinity, Dietrich Franz Jolowicz, both of New York City.
