Transcripts of Byron's death record list his occupation as farmer and soldier. On September 30, 1861, Byron mustered in as a Private in Company E, 6th Regiment, Vermont Infantry. He mustered out in January of 1863 and returned to Chester, but died at home about two weeks later from the illness he contracted in service. On February 19, 1863, his name was included in the "List of Vermont Soldiers in the West Buildings of Baltimore, Md. January 1863."

A death announcement was published in The Vermont Journal, January 24, 1863.
