Son of Soloman Hardy and Phoebe Runnill Hardy.

Henry married Elizabeth Gowing on January 16, 1857 or 1858 in Cavendish, Vermont.

On October 23, 1862, he mustered in as a Private in company K, 16th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers. Henry was wounded at Gettysburg (Pennsylvania)on July 3, 1863, and mustered out September 10, 1863. He re-enlisted in February 1865 and served with Company G, 7th Regiment, Vermont volunteers for a year.

Henry returned to Vermont to farm after the war. He and Elizabeth had six children.
