He was a son of J. Howard and Edna Hawk Burns.
He married Jean A. Searles on Dec. 19, 1955.
He graduated from Selinsgrove High School in 1945.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
Jay was the founder of J.H. Burns Colonial Furnishings, Selinsgrove, which he ran until 1982. He then went to work as a furniture salesman at Wahlbraun's, retiring in 1992.
Mr. Burns was also a member of American Legion Post 25, Selinsgrove, and the Snyder County Historical Society, Middleburg.
Jay enjoyed antiques and history. He also enjoyed playing bridge with friends.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack S. and Bonnie Burns of Mifflinburg and James C. and Judith Burns of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Hayley, Desiree, Schuyler and Rhett; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn and Marjorie Burns, both of Selinsgrove.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert S. and James K. Burns, and a his sister, Barbara Burns.
