Joseph J. Schaaf, 70, of Plantsville, CT; passed away on Monday, (June 13, 2005) at New Britain General Hospital with his family by his side. He was the husband of Bernice (Dunn) Schaaf. Born in Rastadt, Ukraine on October 24, 1934, son of the late Johann and Margaretha (Anton) Schaaf. He lived in Germany until 1952, when he immigrated to the United States with his parents and sisters. The family lived in Texas before moving to New Britain in 1953. For the last 29 years he has lived with his family in Plantsville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served for three years as a communications specialist. He was employed by General Electric in Plainville for 38 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Donau Club in New Britain and the German American Society of Bristol. Besides his wife of 31 years, he is survived by seven children, Sandy Callnan and her husband William of Middlesex, VT. Randy James and his wife Charlene of Lake Hills, TX. Ronald Schaaf and his wife Donna of Wolcott, CT. Debra Whiting and her husband Dave of Hector, NY. Gordon Schaaf and his wife Denise of Goffstown, NH. John Schaaf of Castalia, NC. Theona Palma and her husband Wayne of Reidsville, NC; 21 grandchildren and a great grandson. He also leaves two sisters, Emelie Albert of Kensington, CT. and Olivia Czapski and her husband Joseph of New Britain, CT. his brother-in-law, Eberhard Werschky of Hague, NY. in addition to several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins in Germany and Canada. He was predeceased by his sister, Emma Werchky.
