Behethelan Foote was the daughter of George (1706-59) and Frances Berryman Foote, of Fauquier County, Va. She was a descendant of John Foote (-1648), a gentleman farmer whose home was in Cardenham, Cornwall County, England. She was also a descendant of Richard Foote (1632-post1691) who married in 1657, Hester Hayward (1639/40-post1683), daughter of Nicholas Hayward. Nicholas Hayward was a wealthy merchant whose business was located in Morefields in the Shoreditch Parish of London and who engaged in an extensive trade with the Virginians and Marylanders along the Potomac. His son, Richard Foote Jr. (1666-1725) moved to Virginia in 1688 and lived at "Cedar Grove" on a 400-acre plantation on the Potomac at Chotank Creek in Stafford County. Richard Foote Jr. also owned a 7500-acre interest in the Brent Town tract and in 1700 he was appointed a justice by King William III.
