Icie Mae Cox Pope was born in in Cleburne, Texas, on Dec. 14, 1905. She departed this life on Nov. 29, 1987, following a short illness. Her parents were James Clabourne Cox and Carrie Jane Work Cox. She had been a resident of this area since she came to Springfield with her parents in the fourth grade. Her father worked for the Frisco Railroad until his retirement. Her mother was a housewife. She had one brother, attorney John C. Cox, who preceded her in death. Much of her childhood was spent in the area east of the State Teachers College (now SMSU). For many years, her family kept residences for college students. Her elementary education was a Weaver and Rountree schools. She graduated from Springfield (now Central) Senior High in 1924. During her college days, she was active in speech and debate, and was listed in Who's Who in College. She received her bachelor's degree from the State Teachers College in 1927. Following her graduation, she taught at Carl Junction, then moved to Hartville. There she met and married attorney John C. Pope. Her husband passed away in 1950. Their first son, John Cox Pope, was born in Hartville. In 1938, they moved to Marshfield where their second son, Jams S. Pope was born. He preceded her in death in 1971. In 1951, she received her master's degree from Missouri University (now UMC) in Columbia. During the following years, she taught at Reeds Spring, Elkland, Seymour, and Hillcrest High School in Springfield. She retired in 1972. She served four terms as State Representative from Webster County. While in Legislature, she co-sponsored the bill making the Dogwood the State Tree. Since retiring, she served in the "Silver-Haired Legislature." She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Rebecca Lodge, and the Retired School Teachers Association. She was an active volunteer, including the St. John's Hospital Women's auxiliary. She is survived by one son, John C. Pope, of Granada Hills, Calif.; and three grandchildren, J. Scott Pope, of Springfield, and John Christopher Pope and Joseph William Pope, both of Granada Hills, Calif.

Services for Ice Mae Pope, 81, Springfield, formerly of Marshfield, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Barber-Edwards-Arthur Chapel. Burial will be in Marshfield Cemetery. Mrs. Pope died at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. John's Regional Health Center after a short illness. Visitation will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home, where Eastern Star services will begin at 7:30 p.m
