Franz Joseph Popp was born in the Village of Baden-Baden in Germany in 1849. He emigrated to New York in the United States in 1870.

He worked in a "Bone" Factory in 1880 while residing on West Street next to Hunterfly in Brooklyn in Enumeration District #261. "Bone black" or animal charcoal was used almost exclusively in Brooklyn by the Sugar refinery industry to clarify sugar.

In 1900 he was employed as a "Varnish Maker" while living at 165 Bristol Street in the East New York section of Brooklyn.

He died of "pneumonia and exhaustion" according to his death certificate #24761 in 1907 in Brooklyn, NY.
