Johann Philipp Becker was probably born in the village of Gross-Bieberau in Darmstadt, Hessen, as both his parents were born in that village. His father, for whom he probably was named, Johann Philipp Becker, died there in 1828. His mother, Catarina Elisabetha Eckert, was born in Gross Bieberau on 1 January 1800 to Johannes Eckert and his wife, Elisabetha Margaretha Becker, who also was born in Gross-Bieberau (on 31 May 1775). Philipp's parents were first cousins, his father apparently being a nephew of his grandmother, Elisabetha.
Johann Philipp came to America landing in Baltimore in 1832 with his grandparents, his mother, and his younger sister, Maria Christine, and younger brother, Adam. Johann Philipp was listed as age 11--surname Eckert as were his mother and siblings. Some of his Eckert aunts and uncles also were in the family group. They first went to St. Louis--then settled in Millstadt, St. Clair County, Illinois.
Johann Philipp, his mother, and Edward E. Becker were buried elsewhere and re-interred on Lot 4284 in Bellfontaine in 1903.
