Robert Scott Cleland, age 93, of Mena, Arkansas, died peacefully at his home on May 28, 2013, surrounded by his loving family and caregivers. He was born on January 16, 1920, to John Scott Cleland and Margaret Hardy Brown Cleland in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
The family moved from New Concord, Ohio, to Monmouth, Illinois, when Robert, "Bob", was a young boy, after his father accepted a position as Dean of Monmouth College. Bob later graduated from Monmouth College before joining the U.S. Navy and serving in WWII as an officer on the destroyer, U.S.S. Nicholson.
Shortly before he was sent overseas, Bob married the love of his life, Gwendolyn Joyce Anderson of Richmond, Illinois. Bob and Gwen celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past Fall.
After earning his PhD in Psychology at the University of Florida and working as a trainee in VA hospitals in both Florida and Georgia, Bob worked as a clinical psychologist for the VA in Houston, Texas, from 1958 – 1982. He and Gwen then retired to their horse farm in Northern California before moving to Mena, Arkansas, in 1992.
Bob was happiest fly-fishing, playing the piano, or writing and illustrating his "Bucolicisms." These amazing family letters, full of wit and wisdom and Bob's inimitable slant on life, will be treasured for years to come.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Eva Hanna Cleland and his brother, John W. Cleland.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen; his children, Richard Cleland of Pell Lake, Wisconsin, Margaret Collins of Denver, Colorado, Janet Cleland and son-in-law, Jim Grove of San Anselmo, California; and his brother, Wallace B. Cleland of San Francisco, California. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five nieces and nephews.
The family will be forever grateful to Bob's caregivers, Wanell Hill, Alice Carmack and Judy Davis, and to Ouachita Regional Hospice.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena. No services will be scheduled.
