Born June 29, 1929 in Hughesville MD, he was the son of late Frank Wood Canter and Marguerite Cecilia Burch Canter. He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Marianne Moran Canter, children James E. "Butch" Canter Jr. and Catherine Ann Mattingly (Jenks); his brothers Francis W. (Tommy) Canter and Charles R. (Dickie) Canter and sisters Louise Ryce, Carrie Copsey and Anna Mae Murphy.
He is survived by his children, Mary Beth (Ed) Gawthrop of White Plains, Philip "Buster" Canter (Barbara) of Hughesville, Teresa "Teri Lou" Burch (Joe) of Charlotte Hall, Tina Norris (Mark) of Clements; 13 Grandchildren, Chrissy Beuchert, Connie Wood, Harry Canter, Kenny Canter, CJ Mattingly, Kimberly Guy, Nick Bologna, Danny Bologna, Joshua Norris, Veronica Norris, Jordon Burch, Trevor Burch, Jacob Canter; 9 Great-Grandchildren Keith Wood II, Isabella Canter, Zachary Guy, Dominick Canter, Abby Mattingly, Brooklyn Canter, Francesca Bologna, Annie Guy and Lou Lou Guy; sisters Margaret DeLozier and Elizabeth Huntt.
He served in the United States Marines and by trade he was a skilled bricklayer. He was one of the original founders of Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department, held the position of Chief for numerous years and was a Charter member. He was inducted into the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen's Association hall of fame in 1995. Jimmie and Marianne were owners of Hotel Charles in Hughesville from 1977 - 1991. During his retirement he enjoyed woodworking and was known for his quality of craftsmanship.
Family will receive friends to Celebrate Jimmie's Life on Thursday, March 15, 2012 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD. A Service will be held on Friday, March 16, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 13715 Notre Dame Place, Bryantown, MD. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Eddie Copsey, Skip Edelen, Steve Long, Jr. Murphy, Bubba Murphy, and Frankie Murphy.
