Roy Alton was born on January 4, 1921, the son of Marcus and Betsy (Grande) Christianson at the home farm in Halstad Township. Roy attended country school in Halstad Township. Roy started farming in 1937. He moved to Burbank California in 1941, where he worked for Lockheed Aircraft. Roy returned to farming near Halstad in 1943. Roy was united in marriage to Dorothy Florence Jacobson, on June 22, 1944, at East Marsh River Lutheran Church, rural Halstad, MN. In the early years he raised certified seed potatoes until 1955. Since then he has raised small grain crops. 2008 was Roy's 71st harvest, which he was actively involved in up to the last week of his life.
Roy loved his airplanes and flew for many years, being active in the Flying Farmers Association. Roy was a Deacon and Elder at Halstad Lutheran Church for several years. He served for many years on the Halstad Township Board, and was very active in the Red River Sugar Beet Association to start a plant in the Halstad area. Roy loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren on the farm and cabin, fishing and enjoying the water.
Roy is survived by his wife, Dorothy, Halstad, MN, and his six children: Gene (Penny) Christianson, Fargo, ND, Harvey (Cheryl) Christianson, Halstad, MN, Diane (Bob) Knote, Dickinson, ND, Linda (Rod) Rath, Blackhawk, SD, Lyle (Shelly) Christianson, Denver, CO, and Rodney (Heidi) Christianson, Brookings, SD; one brother, Howard (Mary) Christianson, Halstad, MN; three sisters-in-law, Donna Christianson, Fairmount, MN, Phyllis Christianson, Shelly, MN, Lois Jacobson, Renton, WA; 16 grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, several step great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Marvin and Donald (Buddy), one sister, Beatrice Trom, one great grandchild, Owen Grant Christianson.
Funeral Service: 10:00 am, Saturday, November 15, 2008, at Halstad Lutheran Church, Halstad, MN.
Visitation: Friday, November 14th from 5-7pm at Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, MN, and one hour before the funeral on Saturday.
Prayer Service: Friday 7pm at the funeral home.
Burial: Halstad South Cemetery, Halstad, MN
