Cpl. Lapinski of Las Vegas graduated from high school in Naples, Fla., before attending college in Massachusetts and moving to Las Vegas in 1988. He graduated from the University of South Florida in 1992 with a degree in psychology and worked for Circuit City in Las Vegas before enlisting in the Army. Stan had a difficult time finding a job after he graduated from college and eventually took the job at the electronics store. But after the terrorist attacks in 2001, he decided at the age of 34 that he was going to fight. He researched the infantry and although he had been offered officer school he ultimately decided he would rather be where the action was rather than behind a desk. He was well informed about many subjects and particularly well-versed in history and politics. He spent much of his free time reading and was very also active in the local music scene. Stan planned to go back to school to get a Ph.D. in history and become a teacher. But that would have to wait. For now he was a soldier standing up for what he believed in. Among his awards and decorations are the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and an award for good conduct. His parents moved from Las Vegas to Florida. He was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle in Baghdad at age 35
