Joseph was the son of Thomas Ashbrook who d. in 1810 and Ann Gibson b. 1754 d. 1795. Joseph's father was born in Gloucester Co., NJ. He married Ann Gibson on Feb. 4, 1779 in Gloucester Co., NJ. Thomas and Ann had 6 children.

Joseph married Margaret Hogan on Jan. 24, 1807 in Philadelphia in the Second Presbyterian Church. They had five children Rev. Joseph Jr. born June 5, 1808, Margaret born Feb. 16, 1811, James F. born July 9, 1813, Thomas J. Sr. born Oct. 20, 1820, and Ann born July 8, 1816.

Margaret never married and died July 7, 1872. Joseph married Julia Hildrette, became a minister, and moved to NJ.
Thomas Sr. married Rebecca C. unknown and passed away on Dec. 25, 1896. Ann married Edward Hicks Grant, and passed away Mar. 3, 1851.
