He was the son of Thomas and Rebecca Hoyt Walton. According to the 1890 Census of Union Veterans and Widows of the Civil War, he was a Private in Company F, 16th New York Cavalry, enlisting on March 25, 1865 and being discharged on September 10, 1865. According to his death record, he died of a Cerebral Hemorrhage.
