"'Joe' Shaughnessy, Ex-Deputy Sheriff, Dies at Age 64.
Joseph P. Shaughnessy, 64, of 114 N. Bassett st., former Dane Co. Sheriff and well-known Madison resident died at a hospital here Sunday after a long illness. A lifelong resident, Mr. Shaughnessy served both under Sheriffs Fred. T. Finn and Lawrence Larson during the 1930s. For the past six years he had been employed at the Memorial Union. Mr. Shaughnessy himself was an unsuccessful candidate for sheriff in 1938, running on the Progressive Ticket. He was the son of the late Thomas Shaughnessy, former chief of police of the Madison Police Department. A veteran of World War I, he served in France with the 51st Base Hospital there. He was a member and usher for many years at St. Raphael's Catholic Church. He is survived by three brothers, John H. and Rodney J., both of Madison; and Thomas F., Waupaca; and two sisters, Mrs. John B. Meyer and Sada Shaughnessy of Madison."
